Old worlds, new sounds

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

WORLD MUSIC On her remarkable solo CD, “Jostojoo” (Forever Seeking), Tehran’s Mamak Khadem (formerly with Los Angeles’ Axiom of Choice) sings deep-rooted, world-fusion melodies from Iran, Turkey, Greece, and Armenia as traditional and modern instruments percolate behind her. “Through the 15th century, people traveling on silk caravans would gather around fires at night, playing music,” says Khadem, who performs tonight in Watertown. “Our ensemble

Asleep in a Box

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Asleep in a Box, not to be confused with that song sung by Justin Timberlake on “Saturday Night Live” (that was something else in a box, wasn’t it?), is at the Middle East Upstairs tonight for a show with two other bands from the Bay State, Aux and Sizzlechest. While both Aux and Sizzlechest have a more traditional rock sound, Asleep plays electro-rock that sounds like the future - or the soundtrack to a good 1980s movie. 9 p.m. $9. Middle East

A streamlined “Abduction”

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

If a slack pace is the enemy of comedy, then one can’t fault Boston Lyric Opera for putting the whole of Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio” on an express train. To complain that a transfer of setting from pre-Enlightenment Turkey to the 1920s glamour of the Orient Express robs the opera’s plot of plausibility is to assume that the plot had much plausibility to begin with.

“Abduction” is perhaps the ultimate anti-verismo opera; instead

‘Colbie from MySpace’ finds fame with help from her friends

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Colbie Caillat (rhymes with “valet”) is from California. But sometimes when she encounters fans of the laid-back, R&B-tinged pop of her 2007 debut album “Coco” they believe her hometown is MySpace. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter caused such a stir on the social networking site with her songs - uploaded by her friend Dom - that she went from bedroom composer to major-label artist within a year. Since then she’s toured with the Goo Goo Dolls and

Business Increase Using Moh

Generally people feel letting valuable business promotional opportunities pass you them. All of them know that just about every time we call larger businesses - we are going to be put on hold. Generally all of us also really hate that, so we might like millions of others be real tempted to hang-up after about a minute of silence. So, we have also discovered, if we think about it, that we are much

They run the show

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The applause for Turkuaz, a white-hot Berklee funk band, had barely died down inside Cafe 939 when its singers, Shane Allen, an 18-year-old freshman, and Jennifer Hirsh, a 21-year-old senior, found themselves beaming (in matching gold lamè) on Boylston Street.

“Honestly, it’s about time,” said Hirsh, a music business major, of Cafe 939, the mostly student-run, all-ages music venue and coffeehouse that opened at 939 Boylston St. in December

B-52s still know how to party

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Has it really been 30 years since the B-52s erupted out of Athens, Ga., in a Day-Glo explosion of beehive hairdos, rock lobsters, and planets named Claire, as the giddiest beach party that Frankie and Annette never got invited to? High camp and trash culture - both celebrated stocks-in-trade of this gleefully outlandish combo - may be disposable, but Wednesday night before a sold-out, rapturous room at the Paradise, the B-52s proved they are anything but.

She knows what it takes

Friday, April 25th, 2008

At the height of the bubble-pop explosion of the late ’90s, a pixieish Swedish teenager managed, momentarily, to grab a corner of the spotlight from the Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, and Britney Spears.

Working with the same Midas-like producer as her competition - countryman Max Martin - Robyn Carlsson scored a major hit in 1997 with “Show Me Love.” The melody is probably still rattling around in the brain pan of anyone who went near the pop radio

Shaking the rust off to celebrate a 3-disc set years in the making

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The piece of scrap paper tacked to the door outside a Brighton rehearsal room bears a cheerful but petitioning message:

“Hi Big Dipper! Why don’t I hear ‘Meet the Witch’ coming from your room?”

Twenty years after the song appeared on the Boston band’s second album, “Craps,” Big Dipper, it seems, still has a few fans.

Inside the cramped rehearsal space, four guys who look much younger than their years are loudly running through their repertoire:

Let’s rumble

Friday, April 25th, 2008

What’s 30 years old and shows no sign of growing up, settling down, or getting a real job? It’s WBCN’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble, of course, a competition that aims to find the best rock band in the area. To celebrate three decades of local rock, tonight’s annual WBCN Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble Finals (which features three bands - A.K.A.C.O.D., the Great Bandini, and Girls, Guns, & Glory) includes a special performance by the Neighborhoods (left), a reunited

Do New Kids still have the right stuff?

Friday, April 25th, 2008

RedOne can sing “Hangin’ Tough” and “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” as well as the next New Kids on the Block fan. Growing up a musical omnivore in Morocco, the up-and-coming producer says he liked everything from Bob Dylan to heavy metal to boy bands. But when it comes to the Boston group’s forthcoming reunion album, RedOne is more interested in looking ahead than back.

But whichever way he looks, he is excited.

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The London Symphony Orchestra will perform Prokofiev and Beethoven in Symphony Hall under the volatile baton of Valery Gergiev March 25, an appearance that should be a highlight of the 2008-09 Celebrity Series of Boston season, details of which were announced today.

The total number of scheduled offerings will decline from 46 this season to 39 next season, though the organization will present a higher percentage of its events at Symphony Hall.

Tashi reunion celebrates Messiaen centenary

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The nostalgia wave currently gripping popular music seems to have left classical music largely untouched. Whereas thousands of fans will seemingly pay any price to hear a reunion concert of the Eagles or Police, you rarely hear someone pledging to liquidate their kids’ college funds if they could just hear the original lineup of, say, the Cleveland Quartet.

Nevertheless, one of the most highly anticipated concerts of the season is tonight’s reunion

News media ask for access to R. Kelly’s pretrial hearings

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

CHICAGO—An attorney for two newspapers and The Associated Press says singer R. Kelly’s celebrity status doesn’t justify news media being barred from pretrial hearings in his pornography trial in Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and the AP are seeking transcripts of closed pretrial hearings and asking that a gag order on attorneys be lifted.

Kelly’s attorneys want more time to respond.

LONDON—A British court has overruled the government’s decision to deny Snoop Dogg a visa after he was involved in an airport lounge brawl in 2006.

The Guardian newspaper says a panel of immigration judges has rejected an attempt by Britain’s Home Office to keep the 36-year-old U.S. rapper out of the country.

A lower court ruled in January that Snoop hadn’t started or been responsible for any public disorder.

Police arrested Snoop and

Review Of The Tori Amos Cd To Venus And Back

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must

Solution To Exhaustion

Music keeps us alive. Whenever we are at work, in school, or even at home music makes our body in motion, so can you imagine if an event, like parties and weddings, have no music at all? You may leave the venue or not attend the venue at all. But with the presence of disc jockey services, the word “boring” is just a myth.

When it comes to giving fun and lively sounds, nobody does it better than
