Still eating it up

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Thanks to the revelation of blistering, harmony-rich tracks like “Call It in the Air” from Jimmy Eat World’s 1996 album “Static Prevails,” we narrowly avoided a college career devoted to Dave Mathews soft-rock mediocrity. Thank you so very much, sirs. Then again, it did send us shooting off into an unstoppable spiral of emo fandom. Anyway, Jimmy Eat World, which you probably know from unimpeachably perfect pop tracks like “The Middle” and “Sweetness,”

In good company

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Shaggy singer-songwriter Hayes Carll is being compared to Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, and Bob Dylan (good for him, right?), and tonight’s your chance to see the man following in these legendary footsteps. Notable songs on the Texan’s new disc, “Trouble in Mind,” include the cowboy-rock track “She Left Me for Jesus” and the heartbreaker “Willing to Love Again,” which starts, “I drink too much, and I smoke too much. I laugh at all my own jokes too

A master performance, decades in the making

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

After 60 professional years, most of Kurt Masur’s resume has collected honorifics. Conductor laureate of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and music director emeritus of the New York Philharmonic, Masur will add another in the fall: honorary music director for life of the Orchestre National de France - but not before one last tour as music director proper, which brought orchestra and conductor to Symphony Hall on Sunday afternoon.

What’s in a (soloist’s) name?

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

CAMBRIDGE - Big-name soloists these days command truly astronomical fees, placing them beyond the reach of a semi-professional orchestra like the Boston Philharmonic. Conductor Benjamin Zander has therefore had to be creative with his choices of whom he brings to appear with the group. He has a good track record of recruiting once-eminent players who still have plenty to say with their music but whose dance cards are less full, such as the violinist

Lennon’s `Give Peace a Chance’ lyrics to be sold in July

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

LONDON—When John Lennon gave Gail Renard the scribbled lyrics to “Give Peace a Chance” in 1969, he told the teen to hold on to the piece of paper.

“It will be worth something someday,” predicted Lennon, who was in the midst of his famous eight-day “bed-in” with his new wife, Yoko Ono, in Montreal.

She did, and it is. Christie’s plans to auction the lyric sheet in July as the centerpiece in its rock and pop memorabilia sale. The words to the enduring peace anthem are expected to fetch more than $400,000.

Vital Frequency In Satellite Radio

Vital frequency is the maximum frequency of the radio wave which is returned from a layer for normal incident. In case the frequency of the radio wave exceeds the critical frequency the influence of the ionosphere layer on the path of propagation depends upon the angle of incidence at the ionosphere. With the large value of angle of incidence the electron density is small. In such case the

Health Insurance For Musicians? - An Innovative Austin Program

Austin enjoys the self-promoted but well-deserved reputation as live music capital of the world. In recent years, the city has decided to put its money where its mouth is to ensure that it stays that way. One of the most innovative and socially progressive ways it is doing that is by providing an insurance program for working musicians through HAAM, or Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.

How To Use Polychords To Improvise Jazz

About sixty years later, jazz musicians as John Coltrane and Richie Bierach incorporated such ideas into their music. The benefits of learning poly-chords will enhance an improviser’s repertoire of harmonic concepts. Thus they can create harmonic colorings that can influence a listener’s outlook. This article will focus on how once can practice and incorporate tertian polychords into their

Let’s write a chorus. Posted By : Meena chauhan

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Let’s Write A Chorus.

A chorus is more or less the heart of a song, at least if it’s a good one of course. Why this is true is not as obvious as it seems. People always tend to remember the chorus of a song, while it may not even be the most interesting part of the song at all. The easiest explanation of course
is the fact that the chorus is usually played a couple of times during a song. But if this was the only reason

Unsurpassed Messages On Moh

Affording your business an edge in both advertising marketing is a smart idea and creating an opportunity to target your customers in such a way as to strengthen your business relationship and increase your sales is a smart idea too. And all of these can be done with a simple message-on-hold production, but not just any message is able to do all these things. The primary key here, as with any good

Ipod Unlimited

When the first iPod was launched, nobody had imagined that it would be such a hit. A brain child of Tony Fadell, it was first conceived to provide a better version of an MP3 player. After being turned down by RealNetworks and Phillips, Fadell found support for his project with Apple. Tony Fadell went to work for Apple as an independent contractor, leading a team of thirty people to develop the new MP3 player.

Still in melancholy mood

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

In 1994 UK trip-hop trio Portishead made creeping dread a viable commercial prospect on its popular and influential album “Dummy,” and ubiquitous single “Sour Times.” Beth Gibbons’s woozy warbling, the hint of a tinkling piano in a distant cellar, mechanized yet unsteady beats: This was the sound of your brain on drugs, without actually needing drugs.

The group released a second album in 1997, a live collection the following year, and then quietly

Caillat’s quick rise to fame shows on stage

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

A gentle California breeze blew into Boston over the weekend in the form of a long-limbed, bronze-skinned beach babe named Colbie Caillat. She wore a sweet white dress and a flower in her hair and sang sunny pop tunes about magic and the little things and letting her feelings show. The girls in the audience at the Orpheum screamed “I love you,” because that’s what they do, but when Caillat’s set was finished and the singer left the stage, nobody clamored for an encore.

Fresh sounds that draw on his heritage

SAN FRANCISCO - With his penetrating gaze and studious demeanor, the Puerto Rican-born alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón is a study in quiet confidence. But a few days after he became one of the youngest jazz musicians ever awarded a Guggenheim fellowship, Zenón is still a little dazzled and dazed as the news sinks in.

“When I first heard, everybody around me was going crazy, but I was like, yeah, I still want to get the official letter,”

Choir finishes with revelry, reverence

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

CAMBRIDGE - Scott Metcalfe’s Blue Heron Renaissance Choir finished its season on Saturday with an Iberian anthology to accompany the Museum of Fine Arts’ “El Greco to Velásquez” exhibit, focused on the artistic patronage of King Philip III’s éminence grise, the Duke of Lerma. Older historians regarded the duke as an unscrupulous mooch; recent revisionists have proposed him as a canny, pro-monarchist political innovator. Regardless, and as the expansive program demonstrated, the duke spent freely on musical adornment.
