Enrique Iglesias to quit before age 50

Friday, February 29th, 2008

MEXICO CITY—Enrique Iglesias plans to leave the spotlight before he turns 50 — unlike his famous father, Julio, who is still crooning romantic ballads after four decades.

“I’m not sure I want to be up on a stage when I’m 64 or 65,” the 32-year-old pop star told The Associated Press. “In my father’s case, I think he’s going to die onstage and I respect that very much. In my case, in 15 years I’ll probably look ridiculous singing ‘Bailamos’ (’Let’s Dance’).”

“This has been quite a sentimental journey,” he said Thursday.

Nancy Sinatra said her brother deserves the honor because he “is practically, single-handedly, keeping the American songbook alive.”

WASHINGTON—Barack Obama says his two daughters are fans of Hannah Montana and Beyonce, but think anything to do with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton is “yuck.”

The Democratic presidential contender told celebrity magazine Us Weekly that his daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6, got to meet Beyonce backstage at a concert and “they just love her to death.”

“They’re pretty down on Britney and Paris and all of that. They think that’s very `yuck,’” he said.

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Embrya gets. Embrya simply stated is one of Maxwell’s best CDs to date.

This one literally grabs your attention right out of the gate with Everwanting: To Want You To Want and doesn’t let go until the very last note of the very last song Embrya, which by the way is another great track.

Understanding Chord Symbols
With the growing interest in Jazz and other forms of music, I find more and more people asking about chord symbols and chord construction. While there are many books out there on the market, there is very little explanation of how chords symbols are interpreted. I’d like to share some of my insight with all you music enthusiasts. In many song sheets chords are given for guitar

For St. Vincent, it’s all in the details

Friday, February 29th, 2008

At the tender age of 25, Annie Clark waxes rhapsodic about the good old days, days spent locked in her bedroom in suburban Dallas with no clue about what’s cool. She didn’t have any snobby friends telling her not to listen to jazz. She consumed copious quantities of Alice Coltrane, Captain Beefheart, and cabaret. She discovered the riot grrrls and Patsy Cline. Noise-rock and chorales and nursery rhymes went into the industrial-strength blender

Ashlee Simpson

Friday, February 29th, 2008

When Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz made an appearance at Gypsy Bar last year, he got paid to schmooze at the club, say hello to fans, and look cute behind the velvet rope. He must have enjoyed himself, because his girlfriend is doing the same thing tonight. Ashlee Simpson, sister of Jessica, will be at the bar celebrating the release of her new single, “Outta My Head.” Wentz’s main squeeze is not scheduled to perform, but she may chat with the crowd

Christopher Hall, who’s best known for his now-defunct, Nine Inch Nails-esque industrial rock band Stabbing Westward, is in the Bay State for a few nights with his new band, the Dreaming. On Sunday, the act is at the Lucky Dog Music Hall in Worcester. On Monday, it’s at Harpers Ferry. Don’t expect to hear Stabbing Westward tunes at the gigs. The soundtrack will be provided by local bands Shadwell, Ma’azin, and Revolutionary Snakettes, along with Berklee student DJ NatetrOn. A banjo, a piano, and two willing masters

Friday, February 29th, 2008

In four decades exploring seemingly every nook and cranny of straight-ahead jazz, Latin jazz, and fusion, the pianist Chick Corea has exemplified versatility and spirit of adventure to as great an extent as any musician today. But even omnivorous curiosity has limits. So when asked how much interest he had ever taken, until recently, in working with a banjo as accompanying instrument, Corea’s reply is frank and succinct: “Zero.”

It’s all the

They’ve found a psychedelic groove

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Justin Angelo Morey wasn’t even born when the music he loves most was being made. But his bass guitar - a 1967 Epiphone Rivoli - was.

“It took me 10 years to find that one,” says the 30-year-old Morey, singer-songwriter for the Black Hollies. “I always wanted an Epiphone because Paul Samwell-Smith from the Yardbirds had one and I always associate that bass with him.”

When he finally came across that make and model being auctioned online - and

Matt Costa’s wonder years

Friday, February 29th, 2008

LOS ANGELES - Singer-songwriter Matt Costa isn’t fazed by much.

“I thought that guy was barking,” Costa says, interrupting discussion of how his new sophomore album, “Unfamiliar Faces,” was inspired by his favorite books and possessions. The guy in question is a bouncer at the Troubadour, where Costa is about to play the first of his two sold-out shows earlier this month. And, yes, the guy is barking.

“He’s barking at me,” says a waiter from

Blunt balances his sentimental side with ’70s-style rock

Friday, February 29th, 2008

When you bust out of the gate with a song as big and bland as “You’re Beautiful,” you have two choices: keep feeding the millions of fans in thrall to soft-rock balladry or take a chance and mix it up. James Blunt did the right thing on his second album, “All the Lost Souls,” turning his attention away from his sound hole and his tortured soul to find inspiration in the sounds of the ’70s and beyond.

He opened his concert at the Orpheum Wednesday

Blake’s prophecy, Bolcom’s symphony

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Some composers write in airtight rooms, others leave the windows open. William Bolcom has always had an ear for music with roots outside the concert hall, and he’s often brought so-called vernacular styles proudly into his own works. In fact, he writes fluidly in so many different styles, one never quite knows what to expect from a new work. One of his trademarks however is a rare sensitivity to poetic texts and an ability to distill their expressive essence in music.

A passionate pianist - in print and at the keyboard

Friday, February 29th, 2008

For the last several years, much media coverage of Leon Fleisher has focused on the pianist’s extraordinary return to two-handed playing. Decades ago, a neurological condition called focal dystonia robbed him of the use of his right hand, derailing one of the most promising careers in the history of American music. His comeback - he’s now able to play a limited number of works for both hands - has been widely feted.

Bluegrass grew on them, so family formed a band

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Call it extreme family-bonding. Upon returning from a bluegrass festival in 1999, Sandy Lee and Jere Cherryholmes told their four youngest kids they were forming a band. They bought all the instruments and assigned two kids to fiddle, one to banjo, and one to the guitar. Dad would take the upright bass, and Mom the mandolin. Mom and the kids would practice every day, and, after Dad came home from work, all would play together at night.

Few Suggestions To Buy A New Guitar

When you have come to a decision to buy a guitar, although you may have a thought of just what sort you want, it pays to have a close look at the options the guitar store has to offer. Obviously you will be haggard by looks at first, but you actually should pick it up and see how it feels when you are holding it and give it a strum to ensure out how it sounds.
