Weepin’ Willie Robinson smoked his last cigarette in bed yesterday morning at a Jamaica Plain rest home. The cigarette sparked a fire that ended the legendary blues man’s rich and textured life.
Robinson, 81, had been a sharecropper, an Army veteran, a friend of famous entertainers like B.B. King. He had been homeless and then was rediscovered as a treasure who played with the likes of Susan Tedeschi, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, and Bonnie Raitt

If funk is your thing, head to T.T. the Bear’s tonight for a set of hip-shakin’ rock ‘n’ roll from Boston’s own Superhoney. The ensemble knows what it takes to get in the groove: plenty of tasty bass, rhythm guitar heavy on the wah pedal, and tight horns. The soul of the group is singer Joan Pimentel, whose Joplin-like wail would have been the toast of Motown if she’d been singing in the ’60s. Superhoney will be joined by blues/soul duo Dwight

Johnny D’s usually has trivia on Mondays, but since this is the biggest night out of the year, it’s booked one of Boston’s most popular roots rock and blues acts instead. The Tarbox Ramblers bring fresh energy to delta blues, country stomp, and rockabilly, and guitarist Michael Tarbox is ferocious with a slide. Sit in front of Tarbox’s slightly torn vintage amp and soak in the sound while 2007 ticks away. 21+. 9:45 p.m. $20. Johnny D’s, 17 Holland St., Somerville.

Boston’s spacey dance rockers Campaign for Real Time anchor the dance throwdown of New Year’s Eve. Basstown, the popular club party, presents a night jam-packed with hotness with sets from resident DJs Die Young and Etan, Michael Potvin of Campaign for Real Time, and a performance by electro-pop band Provocateur. Expect a genre- and globe-spanning night of music, says Etan. “Whether it’s from Baltimore or Detroit or Berlin or Paris or Memphis,

There are many types of big bands: the one Benny Goodman fronted in the ’40s and Lyle Lovett’s Large Band, to name a few. And then there is Bang Camaro, a five-piece band with 20 lead singers who all sing at once. Remember those big rock choruses from the ’80s that sounded like an entire choir singing? Bang Camaro sounds like that all the time. Its anthem “Push Push (Lady Lightning)” has gotten the band onto “Guitar Hero II” and the MTV Movie Awards.

The focus of tonight’s New Year’s Eve celebration at Symphony Hall may be Gershwin, but there will also be plenty of Cole Porter, Count Basie, and Glenn Miller filling the air. Keith Lockhart conducts the Boston Pops in a “Gershwin and Friends” program with vocalists Ron Raines and Kathleen Brett. The Ray Santisi Orchestra and the Brad Hatfield Jazz Quintet play during the pre-concert buffet, and members of the Boston Pops Rhythm Section will take

It’s a pity that any Dresden Dolls fan ever has to see the band in a venue other than a theater. Because if a musical pair was ever to the proscenium born, it’s the Boston cabaret rock duo of singer-pianist Amanda Palmer and drummer-guitarist Brian Viglione. The cracked decay of the Orpheum Theatre fits their flamboyant Weimar-meets-DIY aesthetic like a tattered, fingerless glove.
Saturday night the indefatigable Dolls - and we mean that, judging

New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Memories.
Do you remember the new wave of British heavy metal. A musical movement originating in the late 1970s which almost overnight catapulted a seemingly endless supply of British heavy metal bands on the road to either superstardom or obscurity.
If you were a teenager in Britain during the late 1970s or early 1980s with a fondness for rock music you surely must remember as it gathered momentum and became affection ally known as NWOBHM.

Once confined to the churches, Gospel music has now gone almost completely mainstream, and thanks to the efforts of stars like Amy Grant and Kirk Franklin, experts say faith-based music will become even more popular as the new millennium progresses.
“Like the blues, gospel will become part of the fabric of American music and will become synonymous with American music,” says scholar and performer

AIKEN, S.C.—Five of James Brown’s children say their late father’s will should be invalidated because his former advisers used undue influence to get him to create charitable trusts that the advisers would profit from, according to court documents filed this week.
The children were largely left out of the financial portion of the will, which leaves the bulk of the soul singer’s money to trusts set up to educate Brown’s grandchildren and needy kids.

Beginning Of Hip Hop
There’s been much controversy around the actual beginning of hip hop and rap. Being able to tell where it all began is quite tricky business. Phrases like “It all started with Dr. Dre” or “It all began with 2Pac” are extremely common. Although the contribution of these colossal artists to hip hop and rap is definitely indubitable, the answer goes to a point further back in time.
A brief incursion
