Don’t be afraid of the dark

New England Conservatory teacher Ran Blake is a noir pianist. This doesn’t mean he only plays the black keys; it’s a reference to his music style, which is partly inspired by Robert Siodmak’s 1945 film “The Spiral Staircase” (above). This noir classic is the focal point for tonight’s “Spiral Staircases Halloween Concert” of music, readings, and film clips. The 8 p.m. program will be performed by NEC faculty, students from the contemporary improvisation

department, alumni, and friends. The diverse playlist will include Roy Webb’s film score, “Driftwood” by Chris Connor, some Rodgers and Hart, and Chinese folk tunes. Free.
