Getting More Gigs - It’s All In The Planning

The idea of “promoting” or “selling” your band instead of using an agent can strike fear into the hearts of many musicians. Somehow we feel it’s not right to have to get out there and push ourselves – but self promotion can work.

When people ask about the best way to tackle gig-getting I always stress the importance of planning and organizing. Get these wrong, or don’t do

Remaking the scene

Friday, September 28th, 2007

When the Celtic punk band the Dropkick Murphys spits out the scathing final chords of “Skinhead on the MBTA” at Avalon Sunday, it will be a signature sendoff for the popular Boston nightspot.

By turns an explosive rock club and a glamorous disco, Avalon has been the jewel of Lansdowne Street since opening as the psychedelic hot spot the Ark in 1969. Now the nightclub, along with its adjacent sister club, Axis, is closing for a seven- to nine-month

BeanTown will be cooking with all this jazz

Friday, September 28th, 2007

In just a few years, the BeanTown Jazz Festival has gone from a fledgling daytime street party in the South End to a major event on the city’s arts calendar. Now in its second year of backing by the Berklee College of Music, the festival is gathering an ever-more prestigious lineup of performers. Even leaving aside tonight’s sold-out Symphony Hall benefit concert, tomorrow’s performances on Columbus Avenue, all of which are free, offer a strong panorama of jazz creation today.

Heart’s Ann Wilson gets a little help from friends (and her sister)

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Ann Wilson has had an implied ampersand following her first name for so long that it feels strange to type it out by itself.

As the lead singer of the hard-rock band Heart, Wilson has, for 31 years, more often than not been referred to in the same breath as her younger sister, Heart guitarist Nancy. So entwined have they been — appearing since 1976 back to back, head to head, and, in the ’80s, shoulder pad to shoulder pad on album covers and in videos — that their names come out sounding like one word sometimes.

A harmonious relationship for mother and son

Friday, September 28th, 2007

In recent years Jonathan Biss has established himself as one of the most serious and intelligent young pianists before the public. It seems, however, that he’s not above a bit of wry humor. The biography on Biss’s website states that though he was born in 1980, he made his professional debut several months earlier, having “performed, prenatally, the Mozart A Major Violin Concerto at Carnegie Hall, with the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Lorin Maazel.”

For the love of Joyce

Friday, September 28th, 2007

NEW YORK - Few life stories in jazz have been as fulfilling as that of George Wein, the pianist and promoter who virtually invented the jazz festival at Newport in 1954 and went on to become the music’s most iconic and influential impresario.

Now, two years since the death of Joyce Alexander Wein, his wife and longtime creative partner, and days away from his own 82d birthday, Wein is looking back on a charmed life that has bridged business,

Beethoven without those pesky houskeeping devils

Friday, September 28th, 2007

New England Conservatory often has the curious problem of struggling to fill the seats at its own worthy and completely free concerts. But no such troubles plagued Wednesday evening’s all-Beethoven recital by one of the school’s most distinguished faculty members, the Boston-based piano guru Russell Sherman. Jordan Hall was packed.

The recital could be described as a typical Sherman affair, which is to say, not typical in the least. Onstage he

Vedder’s ‘Wild’ barely gets going

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Eddie Vedder’s solo debut starts out strongly with the appropriately titled “Setting Forth,” a jangly, rootsy spin on the music on which the Pearl Jam singer has built his career . . . and then suddenly it’s over, barely a minute and a half after it began.

That’s the problem with “Into the Wild.” Even though the album’s role as the soundtrack to Sean Penn’s lost-in-the-wilderness film explains the songs’ briefness - their job, first and foremost,

Gallants in the face of adversity

Friday, September 28th, 2007

It’s been a bad week for the San Francisco folk-punk duo Two Gallants. On the first day of their tour, their car broke down in Chico, Calif., en route to a show in Portland, Ore. Two Gallants - childhood friends Adam Stephens (voice, guitar) and Tyson Vogel (drums) - had to rent a U-Haul truck to lug their gear to the club. The next day, on their way to a show in Vancouver, the pair were stopped at the Canadian border, where they were initially refused entry.

Banhart starts softly, ends electric

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

When he began his performance Tuesday at the Roxy, Devendra Banhart sat, acoustic guitar in hand, plucking subdued singer-songwriter fare marked by a blissed-out delicacy. When he ended it nearly two hours later, he was stripped to the waist and practically spitting out his words as his band rolled and tumbled through the 12-bar blues pattern of “I Feel Just Like a Child.”

But what could have been a split musical personality was anything but,

Regan has what it takes

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Critics have compared Fionn Regan to both Bob Dylan and Nick Drake - sometimes even in the same sentence. Referencing two iconic singer-songwriters raises some red flags. How apt a description is it for Regan’s spare, acoustic debut, “The End of History”? Is it lofty or pat praise?

True, Regan’s finger-picking style and indie folk songs bear a certain delicacy reminiscent of Drake. And he’s a keen, wistful wordsmith, much like both legends. Even

Cantata Singers’ season takes flight with ‘Lindbergh’

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

STOW - The Cantata Singers strayed far from their usual home in Jordan Hall on Sunday afternoon, taking up residence in an aviation museum tucked rather curiously among apple orchards and scenic country roads about an hour’s drive from Boston. The hook was the afternoon’s main musical offering: the local premiere of Kurt Weill’s radio cantata “The Lindbergh Flight,” which takes as its subject Charles Lindbergh’s historic 1927 transatlantic journey.

Jill Scott feels free to rock on ‘The Real Thing’

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

“I like to tell stories. And I like to emote.”

That’s Jill Scott describing the common thread her music career, a brief but luminous seven-year stretch during which she’s lit the cracks between spoken-word, R&B, hip-hop, and jazz. With the release today of her third studio album, “The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3,” the Grammy-winning singer and songwriter can add rock ‘n’ roll to the list.

Mission’s the same whether playing a bar or ICA

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

“It’s very weird that the floor’s not sticky - it’s not right,” joked Mission of Burma drummer Peter Prescott as the band returned for an encore during its matinee performance Sunday at the Institute of Contemporary Art. And so it was weird, at least a little. And not just because of the clean, modernistic lines and sanitary state of the performance space, either.

Punk in the afternoon? Mission of Burma in broad daylight? Before a seated audience

The Queen proves she can do it all, with style

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

With the exception of Will Smith, Queen Latifah has easily been the most successful and celebrated of the hip-hop set to make the transition to screens both big and small.

Since turning to acting in 1991, the woman born Dana Owens has played, among others, a magazine publisher (her sitcom “Living Single”), a bank robber (”Set It Off”), a civil-rights leader (”Hairspray”), a conniving prison matron (”Chicago”), and an HIV activist (HBO’s “Life Support”). Those last two earned her Oscar and Emmy nominations, respectively.

On gritty ‘Scene,’ LaVette lets loose

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Even after all these years, the crime in question on Bettye LaVette’s new album still riles her. “The Scene of the Crime” is a pointed reference to LaVette returning to Muscle Shoals, Ala., the fabled Southern city whose recording studios gave soul music many of its touchstones, most notably Aretha Franklin’s string of late-’60s classics.

LaVette recorded in Muscle Shoals once, back in 1972, and she considered the album, “Child of the Seventies,”

‘Shine’ is inspired but angry

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Joni Mitchell has long made her disgust for the music industry plain. For nearly a decade, she was content to mostly sit it out and express her creativity through her paintings and fine art and collaborations with a ballet company. Occasionally, she would venture into the recording studio for an album of standards or one of re-imaginings of her own vast catalog of classics.

With the release today of the beautiful yet angry “Shine,” the incredibly
