Bands look and sound tough, but Ozzfest lacks bite of its heyday

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

MANSFIELD — Gods and monsters. Ozzfest 2007 had plenty of monstrous-looking (and often sounding) bands. And it had its deity, Ozzy Osbourne, who isn’t usually ranked alongside those rock gods of smoldering looks and stunning voice.

However, when the 58-year-old stepped onstage at the sold-out Tweeter Center on Monday, following a hilarious video montage spoofing such programs as “The Sopranos” and “Entourage,” the raccoon-eyed star received a touchingly warm standing ovation.

At Tanglewood, a BSO tradition in flux

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

LENOX — Tweaking performance traditions can be a good thing, as even the most worthy rituals, when left untouched, can calcify into stale routine. In recent years, the BSO has typically performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to close the classical season at Tanglewood, but last summer, music director James Levine switched things up by opening the summer with the Ninth instead.

This year, Levine and the BSO took a pass from the event altogether

Melding sweet soul music with Afrobeat

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

At the start of the new second album by the Budos Band, simply titled “The Budos Band II,” a double blast of horns ushers in a liquid groove that channels the spirit of Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, and a generation of Afro-funk innovators. It’s to the point of osmosis, but this isn’t Lagos circa 1972: It’s New York City in 2007, at a time when Brooklyn hipster label Daptone has become curator and celebrant of an old-school soul revival. And the Budos,

Download Legal Free Music For Ipod

Many websites have been popping up that promise you can download legal free music for ipods. But is it true?

Well, I have to tell you that you can find many songs on the web that are free to download. But the downloads from these sites are most certainly illegal and you could find yourself in a lot of hot water if you download them.

Music Artist Dave Matthews Band Bio

The Dave Matthews band is made up of Matthews, Stefan Lessard, Leroi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, and Carter Beauford. The group is best known for the unmistakable sound that is a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Dave Matthews built up a strong word-of-mouth following in the early ’90s by touring the country constantly, concentrating on college campuses.

The Rise And Rise Of Andrew Lloyd Webber

Born to William and Jean Lloyd Webber on 22nd March 1948, Andrew Lloyd Webber was drawn towards inspecting ancient English monuments as well as making his own music from a very early age. So enchanted was he by both these activities that it was almost certain he would eventually choose to follow one of them as a career.

However, a chance introduction to the theatre opened up

On her new ‘Kala,’ M.I.A. speaks out for the world’s voiceless

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

“I put people on the map that never seen a map,” M.I.A. boasts on “20 Dollar,” a track from her hotly anticipated second album, “Kala,” out today on Interscope. The Sri Lankan-British MC’s first album, “Arular,” was the hipster album of 2005, thanks to its bhangra-meets-electroclash sizzle accompanied by a muddled leftist agenda of Third World rights and sympathies for the Tamil Tigers and the Palestine Liberation Organization.

“Arular” was an

A little bit of everything, and it’s all good

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Generally speaking, when a band hopscotches its way through genres on one disc it results in a compartmentalized affair: Certain songs feed certain moods but rarely taste good all in one sitting.

Former indie darlings Rilo Kiley pull off one of the best recent exceptions to that conventional wisdom with their instantly infectious fourth release, “Under the Blacklight.”

The California-based quartet, now recording for Warner Bros., mixes and

New Pornographers shift to lower gear for ‘Challengers’

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

The stuff we love about the New Pornographers — sweet, odd chord changes; inscrutable lyrics; elegantly dorky choruses — are alive and well on “Challengers,” the Canadian indie rockers’ fourth album.

But something has changed. The pace is slower, the mood mellower. Instrumentation is less frenzied. Moments of epic sweep materialize briefly and then vanish, almost at random. Euphoria and melancholy, the band’s strongest suits, seem to have agreed

There’s something for everyone at Download fest

Monday, August 20th, 2007

There is no unifying theme to the Download Festival. Unlike Ozzfest, which attracts metal fans, or Vans Warped, a punk-inspired behemoth, the Download Festival, now in its fifth year, aims to deliver “the best in alternative and modern rock,” a category that includes all the good bands that aren’t out with Ozzfest or the Warped tour. As one observer remarked, Saturday’s 10-hour fest was like an iPod shuffle — thankfully, one that belonged to a music fan with excellent taste.

Nickel Creek bids a lovely adieu

Monday, August 20th, 2007

All swan songs should be executed with the grace and tunefulness displayed by Nickel Creek Friday night at the Bank of America Pavilion.

The bluegrass-folk-pop trio’s “Farewell (For Now) Tour” was everything for which a longtime fan could have hoped.

They performed a long, wide-ranging set full of the well-known, the well-liked, and great surprises. They refused to be maudlin, saying only a heartfelt aloha at night’s end. And they added value and spice by bringing along friend Fiona Apple.

Rock and roll reigns in tribute to Boston’s singer Brad Delp

Monday, August 20th, 2007

If what matters, as Brad Delp once sang, is what you leave behind, then the former Boston singer’s legacy is in good hands.

Last night at the Bank of America Pavilion, family, friends, and former bandmates paid tribute to not only the singer behind the microphone for classic rock songs including “More Than a Feeling,” but the man they loved and are no doubt still grieving following his death by suicide in March.

Dubbed “Come Together: A Tribute to Brad Delp,” the five-hour event was much more celebration than memorial.

The Debt, Rock And Roll Owes To Acoustic Foam

Okay folks listen up today I have an interesting question for you.

Hands up those who reckon they know five of music’s’ greatest historical moments and technological innovations?

Surely there would be the usual suspects, the Beatles, Elvis Rolling Stones Motown possibly, Brit Pop even and who could forget the great rock ‘n roll swindle of the 70s that was the Sex Pistols but what about delving slightly behind the scenes?

Music Artist Fiona Apple Bio

Fiona’s break into the music industry came when a friend, who babysat for a record executive, handed her employer a demo. Fiona’s rich contralto voice, piano skills and lyrics got the attention of Sony Music executive Andy Slater, who signed her to a record deal.

In 1996 Fiona’s debut album, Tidal, was released by a subsidiary of Sony. The album was hugely successful, going on to sell 2.7

An unlikely trip from Dirty Vegas to the South Shore

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

The story of how the London pop band Dirty Vegas moved to Massachusetts begins with “Days Go By,” the mega hit that made the group famous back in 2002.

The song started as a guitar ballad that Dirty Vegas frontman Steve Smith wrote about an ex-girlfriend he couldn’t get out of his mind. When Smith played the song for his bandmates Ben Harris and Paul Harris (no relation), they liked it. But since they were a dance-music trio, they sped up the pace and produced “Days Go By” with electronic beats and distorted vocals.

With ‘Stars’ in his eyes, Wainwright keeps busy

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

The last time we saw Rufus Wainwright — singer, songwriter, bon vivant — he was singing his “Gay Messiah” to an appreciative crowd at Cyndi Lauper’s gay-friendly True Colors tour at the Bank of America Pavilion in June.

It’s been a productive period for the son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, who nonetheless has been making his own musical name for a decade.

Last summer he re-created Judy Garland’s famous Carnegie

A long trip to the land of Ozz

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

In Ozzfest’s 11-year history, several acts have put a foreign spin on Satan’s favorite soundtrack. But this year the sold-out metal extravaganza, which rolls into the Tweeter Center tomorrow, has seriously gone international. Bands from Italy, Australia, and Germany have previously gotten their passports stamped to land in Mansfield, and, of course, there was the Great Swedish Invasion of ‘05.

By and large, though, the sweltering riff-and-stomp

MAHLER: THIRD SYMPHONY Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Bernard Haitink, conductor (CSO Resound)

When Bernard Haitink took over as principal conductor of the Chicago Symphony last fall, following Daniel Barenboim’s retirement as music director, he began with a massive, 90-minute showpiece, a speciality of his: Mahler’s Third Symphony. At the end of the first performance, critics and audience cheered as if Fritz Reiner or Georg Solti had returned.

Blues Piano Lessons - A Quick Tutorial

It may surprise you but, few pianists know how to successfully execute a simple blues on the piano. Given the hundreds of different chord variations in a 12-bar blues it’s no wonder that many don’t know which to choose so they simply avoid the whole process altogether.

Here are a few simple rules to follow when learning to play blues on the piano.

Soul Asylum was an outgrowth of a previous band, Loud Fast Rules, formed in 1981 by guitarist and vocalist Dave Pirner, guitarist and backing vocalist Dan Murphy, bassist Karl Mueller, and drummer Pat Morley. Soul Asylum began performing around the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and they quickly developed a core following. Pat Morley was later replaced by Grant Young in 1984.
