In all its alt-country glory, Wilco reaches for the sky

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Wilco performed Thursday night on a stage stripped to nothing, with the bones of the Bank of America Pavilion exposed, and no visual bells or whistles to beef up the entertainment quotient. Wilco isn’t the only rock group whose music can stand alone — but it’s the only band of its caliber that would risk it. The Chicago outfit has built a brilliant career from combining sturdy American songcraft with a fearless sense of adventure, and its Boston show was no exception.

A warm and understated Adams sharpens his focus

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

SOMERVILLE — Ryan Adams closed a two-hour-plus set last night with one hand raised to the stage lights, the other tucked into his lap. “Can I get a Diet Coke?” he asked politely. “I promise I won’t stay up all night.”

This is what passes for a tantrum in Adams’s world these days: a disjointed drawl and a dry laugh, ghosts of the irascibility that once defined his career.

Adams, 32, is touring behind “Easy Tiger,” his ninth country rock album

Positive Music for a Relaxing Meditation

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Meditation music produces measurable results. It slows our heartbeats down to about one beat per second, which can allow us to relax, let go, meditate and/or fall asleep.

There are different types of meditation however, and different types of music are appropriate for each. A relaxing meditation is intended to help you slow down and release stress, so the best music is easy to listen to and has elements that embody peace and harmony. The instruments

Josh Groban, very talented Pop artist has released him latest CD titled Josh Groban and Wow! It’s good.

I Took Piano Lessons As a Kid, But I’ve Forgotten Almost Everything

Friday, June 29th, 2007

There are literally millions of adults today who took piano lessons when they were growing up, but at some point along the way gave them up. Some couldn’t care less, but many have an urge down deep to take up piano playing again someday.

Over the years I have never heard anyone say “I’m glad I never learned to play the piano”, but I have heard hundreds say something like “I sure wish I had paid attention when I was a kid”, or “My piano teacher was too strict (or too boring), but I would love to get back to the piano some day.”

How To Play Well Known Piano Solos - June (Barcarolle), Op. 37, No. 6 by Tchaikovsky

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Without reverting to the threadbare device of sextuple measure, the composer has here furnished a barcarolle of the highest type. It is not a mere suggestion of the motion of a gondola on a shimmering, moonlit canal, but there is also a longer swell, in the rising and falling phrases, which suggests motion of the water of a large body over which the boat glides.

Begin by study of the first four measures of the accompaniment, for their rhythm.

The most important thing to do when learning any subject, is to first clear up any misunderstandings regarding the nomenclature related to it. In fact, no matter what you’re studying, or even just reading, the moment you go past a word that you don’t understand, look it up in the dictionary.

A good example of this is the first sentence of this article. If you didn’t know what nomenclature meant, you would instantly have been confused, and your

Five Top Tips On How To Play MIDI Bass Pedals

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Arranger keyboards such as the Korg PA1X and the Yamaha PSR S900 are becoming immensely popular, with a little help from the dwindling electric organ market. If you want an automatic bass line along with an automatic virtual band, then the arranger keyboard will provide this, as long as the chords you are playing are fairly simple. The new arranger keyboards however do allow you to turn off or divert the bass line so you can choose your own bass line using a MIDI pedal board.

Time seems to stand still for Rush

Friday, June 29th, 2007

MANSFIELD — Rush had promised to trot out tunes it hadn’t played for decades, and the Canadian trio kept its word Wednesday night at the Tweeter Center. The band is touring behind a new album, “Snakes & Arrows,” but spent the bulk of its three-hour show digging through its voluminous catalog.

In fact, apart from several songs off the new record, the newest tunes they played were the driving “Dreamline” (from 1991’s “Roll the Bones”) and the

For South End jazz club, the hype is warranted

Friday, June 29th, 2007

When you think of a beehive, you think of frenetic activity, of relentless buzz, of creatures milling about in social circles, right? Good. You’re already in the right frame of mind for the South End’s newest main attraction: The Beehive.

Have mercy on the clueless diner who tries to get into this place without a reservation, especially after 8 p.m. on a weekend. A line out the door is a common sight on this corner of Tremont Street, with inquiring minds wanting to know if they can believe the hype. The short answer is yes.

CAMBRIDGE — Who knew the revolution could be so much fun?

Wednesday night at the oven also known as T.T. the Bear’s Place, Tom Morello raised a call to arms with music both tender and raucous under the guise of his alter ego, the Nightwatchman.

The former Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave guitarist is deadly serious about his ultra-left-wing political beliefs — he opined that President Bush should be brought before a war crimes tribunal,

The fours of July — and late June

Friday, June 29th, 2007

It’s hard to put one’s finger on what’s so magical about the string quartet. Since the genre was brought into existence almost single - handedly by Haydn in the 18th century, it has become the preeminent vehicle for chamber music. The combination of two violins, viola, and cello offers a composer an eerily perfect union of richness and clarity, fragility and power. Listen to the quartets of Beethoven, Schubert, Bartok, Shostakovich, or Carter:

Scotland and Argentina, on one harp

Berklee College of Music famously draws a very international student body, so it’s no surprise that the ongoing summer showcase of emerging Berklee artists, Tuesdays at the Beehive, has presented groups led by musicians from such far-flung places as Nigeria, Brazil, and Italy. What attracts all this young talent to the Boston institution and weaves a common thread through their work is jazz, the American music par excellence. But the diversity

Looking for the buzz? Follow Protokoll.

Friday, June 29th, 2007

If there is (or, in fact, ever was) a so-called “Boston sound,” Protokoll sure isn’t it. If anything, the Allston-based outfit with the danceable grooves and angular guitar riffs would seem to have far more in common with the United Kingdom post-punk scene that spawned the likes of New Order and the Cure, which in turn spawned overseas contemporaries like Bloc Party and Clinic. Of course, closer to home, New York City’s Interpol and the LA-based Rapture are also touchstones.

How To Build A Recording Studio

Whether you are creating a recording studio at home or in another location, the goals of reducing sound transmission and enhancing acoustical quality remain the same. Being one of the piano pieces written for each month of the year, this is the Russian November with a sleigh scene. We have seen pictures of the Troika with its three black horses, gaily caparisoned with a hoop of sleigh-bells over their necks, and the occupants covered with costly furs. Here is the musical presentment, and it is really remarkable

It is said that during the composer’s stay in the island of Majorca in quest of health this prelude, or shall we call it nocturne, was written in a monastery where he lodged on a wet day. The reiterated eighth note depicts the dripping raindrops, perhaps from the eaves of his open window. It is not difficult to conjure up in the memory the impressions
