Billy Joel Is Not The Piano Man

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Actually, he’s much more than just the Piano Man! So I mean no disrespect to Billy Joel when I say he isn’t the Piano Man, because he certainly is the original. I just wanted to draw attention to several aspects and talents of Billy Joel, besides just being known as The Piano Man. Of course it is due to Billy Joel’s enormous piano talent and his signature song “Piano Man” the reason he is called the piano man. With a musical career spanning over

Edgar Winter: The Raunchiest Alto Sax Of Them All

Monday, February 26th, 2007

One of my favorite all time musicians is Edgar Winter. He’s one of a very few alto sax players that inspired my playing as a tenor saxophonist. He’s one of those guys that get’s a really good, big raunchy rock & roll sound on the alto sax. When people talk about rock & roll sax it’s almost always referring to a tenor player, but Edgar just screams and wails as bad as any rockin’ tenor.

I’ve talked to people that knew of Edgar Winter and didn’t

A guitarists struggle to learn guitar tab…

My first adventure in to a song was Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. I went to the search engine and had no idea what a tab was or even how to begin searching for one.

It’s one thing to make singing mistakes as a kid and quite different to become

Provocative assault on hedonism by Weill and Brecht roars to life

Monday, February 26th, 2007

On March 9, 1930, a riot rocked the Neues Theater of Leipzig. It was a response to “The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny,” a new epic opera by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, and a fierce blow to the solar plexus of capitalism in the wake of world war and economic depression. The opera had its brief moment, but the German careers of both men were shattered soon afterward by the Nazi rise to power. In later decades, the brilliant score, after

Why Take Piano Lessons? Posted By : Paul Tobey

Why Take Piano Lessons?

Did you ever notice how most people who start off at a young age taking piano lessons rarely continue past high school? Then, when these people grow into adults many of them will eventually regret their decision to quit. So much so that, many will actually seek out a new piano teacher and start all over again.

Why do most people quit? I don’t think it’s because they’re not motivated or they

Sure some people may have a better ear for music than others and some people seem like they are born with an instrument in their hands. But no matter how much natural talent you have or haven’t got the only way that you are going to become anywhere near proficient is by putting in the hours day after day.

Rap Music - Good for our Children’s Ears?

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

So we all know the rap music industry is big business. How big? Assuredly in the billions of dollars. But is this rap music—and more specifically the genre referred to as gangsta rap—good for our children’s ears and moreover society? Common sense would dictate that the last question is quite a rhetorical one.

Now in defense of rap artists, I understand that this genre of music presents a vehicle of expression for some who might have had no other

MP3 Music as we know it now has been around since since 1991. Now over 15 years later has become the want of every child, teen & adult. Even my Dad has an MP3 player and spends time every week buying MP3 Music online to add to his player. Yes, he actually pays for it and why not, with all the controversy on freeware you can end up with a virus on your computer and hey, isn’t that what we all want.

Slayer — My Opinion

As a long time fan of Slayer it is my pleasure to get to say a few good words about them. They formed in 1982 in Huntington Beach, CA by Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. Early on they sounded a lot like Judas Priest, especially the album Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel, Hell Awaits. After signing with Rick Rubin they released their land mark album Reign in Blood featuring the songs Angel of Death and Raining

History of Indie Music - 1960’s

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Tracing the roots of independent artists is difficult, because there have been artists who have long bucked the trends put upon them by monied powers in order to do what they feel right. Minstrels in medieval Europe and poets in the Islamic empire risked more than their livelihoods if they did not kowtow to the demands of the tyrants in charge (the ancient equivalent of modern big labels); they stood a good chance of being killed and mutilated as well.

David Sanborn “Inside” Smooth Jazz CD Review

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

One word describes the CD Inside from David Sanborn… AWESOME!

It’s seems so rare to get a CD that doesn’t have even one bad track on it that I really get excited when I run across one like this one from Sanborn.

There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it’s own.

It has a good mix of 10 tracks by a clearly gifted artist.

The nice thing about a CD like this from an artist the likes

Carlton, who is also a player in the group Fourplay, has been a force in the smooth jazz world for quite some time now. His guitar playing is in top form on this CD.

Overall Fingerprints is an outstanding release.

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better it gets. I’m thinking Yes, Please is easily one of this smooth jazz super groups best CDs.

It’s not often enough that I can just pop in a CD and comfortably listen to it from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Yes, Please. Every track is enjoyable and is always
